OK, so the January inservice gave us a better focus on what we should really be trying to do. I originally thought that the SLO's were supposed to replace the outcomes and objectives of the course outline. But it turns out that the SLO's are really supposed to be a level above that, and be a little bit more general. That doesn't mean that we can't discuss the specific objectives of the class. But it does mean that our SLO's should be a generalization of those specific objectives. Are you with me?
At any rate, Susan, Jason and myself took this new viewpoint and came up with some preliminary SLO's for the 54 class. Here they are (each is followed by the numbers of specific objectives as listed in the outline that we thought were covered by that SLO)
1. Identify and apply properties of real numbers, and perform accurate arithmetic operations with numbers in various formats and number systems. (1, 5, 7, 10, 11)
2. Demonstrate the ability to manipulate/simplify algebraic expressions, and to classify and solve algebraic equations with appropriate techniques. (2, 3, 4, 6)
3. Demonstrate the ability to apply and analyze logical processes in problem solving, with an emphasis on applications. (2, 8, 9)
4. Communicate mathematical ideas and the meanings of results of mathematical problems in a proficient manner. (2, 4, 8, 9)
This was done in a rather short amount of time, so any suggestions/changes/additions/constructive comments are welcome. Let's get another discussion going!
